about 300 people live in a small town. every year they do lottery drawings. they take it pretty seriously. they found out other towns had stopped doing it and they called them all dumb. it takes longer in other towns for them to do the lottery. village children run around collecting stones and make a pile in the square.  then the men gather them next and then the women. mr. summers runs the lottery because he has a lot of time to do things for the town. tessie was late so everyone was mocking her. bill drew the paper with the black dot so tessie said it wasnt fair and they redid it. the second time he drew a blank one and tessie got the black dot.
